What We're Doing for the Environment:
1. Air Quality
- Hotel is 100% smoke free.
- We use no chemical pesticides.
- 90% of paint used is non-toxic, water based paints that contain a minimal amount of adhesives, minimizing the release of volatile organic compounds into the air.
- Housekeeping uses negative ion “Ozinators” to clear odor from air.
- Our staff maintains air ducts monthly.
- Live potted plants and trees on property keep air healthier and reduce carbon monoxide.
- Guestroom air conditioning brings in fresh air from outside.
- Fire extinguishers are metal & refillable. They contain no ozone-destroying ingredients.
2. Energy Efficiency
- We installed draperies with thermal reflective liners in all guestrooms, to keep rooms naturally cooler.
- The central roofs have light-colored, reflective surfaces.
- Our staff maintains caulking and weather stripping to keep air conditioning and heating inside.
- We tint guestroom windows that receive direct sun light.
- We have an energy-efficient air conditioning (chiller) unit.
- All interior lighting was changed to compact fluorescent bulbs.
- Six bronzed skylights in our main lobby bring in natural light and eliminate the need for electricity during the day.
- Light interior colors decrease light absorption, reducing the need for artificial light indoors.
- Motion sensors turn lights on and off in all storage areas.
- Exterior lighting fixtures have compact fluorescent bulbs.
- Hot-water holding tanks and water pipes are insulated to prevent energy loss.
- We maintain and clean water heating equipment regularly to keep them running efficiently
- We maintain hot water temperature between 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the energy used by water heaters.
- Soft drink machines keep cooler with less electricity when located indoors.
3. Waste Minimization & Recycling
- Public Areas - Our toilet paper rolls are “coreless.” This eliminates the cardboard centers and also allows us to use the roll in its entirety.
- Dispensers are used in the Fitness Center for personal care products to eliminate small, individual packaging.
- Guestrooms have glass-drinking glasses that are sanitized and re-used.
- Hyatt Regency Savannah donates slightly used or soiled furnishings to non-profit organizations, rather than throwing them away.
- We purchase food in bulk to reduce packaging waste.
- When a mop gets dirty Housekeeping removes and washes the mop, rather than throwing it away.
- Team members reduce the need for paper by communicating with each other through e-mail when possible.
- We recycle newspaper and cardboard.
4. Water Quality and Conservation
- Low faucet aerators in kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Guestrooms have water saving showerheads.
- Housekeeping changes linens and towels daily only at the guests’ request with the exception of VIP’s and every 3rd day service.
- Pre-rinse nozzle in kitchen.
- 50% of the food grinders in our kitchen have been removed.
- The irrigation system has water saving sprinkler heads. Our Engineering staff monitors the system for leaks and adjust sprinkler orientation as needed to ensure that they are only watering the plants.
- Our maintenance staff uses mechanical methods to clear obstructed pipes or biodegradable drain cleaners.
- We use no toilet tank cleaning tablets or powders.
5. Human Health
- Stainless steel cookware eliminates aluminum from the cooking process.
